The first Tour de Sabah was held over 5 days in October 2008. In 2009 the tour grew in all areas, we had more riders, more families, more kilometers, and the peloton increased in speed. In 2010, a total of 45 riders participated over 7 days and almost 600km of amazing cycling around the West Coast of Sabah, Malaysian Borneo.
Riders are mainly from the Leighton Group coming from around the world such as Australia, Hong Kong, New Zealand, South Africa, England, Middle East, Vietnam, and Malaysia. We had six local Sabahan riders sponsored to join the 2010 tour.
To make Tour de Sabah a worthy fun fitness holiday, the organiser will donate part of the riders' contribution to a charity. San Damiano Convent (Hostel) in Kiulu, which is under the Tuaran district, was chosen as the charity for 2010. It was selected in a hope to raise awareness in helping poor and underprivileged children from rural areas irrespective of their race and religious background, with the aim to give them equal opportunity in getting a good education and hope for a better life in the future.
In 2011 we donated RM10,000 to Jabatan Kebajikan Am Sabah. The donation went towards helping those affected by flood disaster in Kota Marudu district in early 2011. The donation went to Tabung Rayuan & Derma Derma (TRDD). The donation mock check was presented at the official residence of Sabah's current Head of State, TYT Tun Juhar Mahiruddin, and his wife, Toh Puan Norlidah Datuk R M Jasni.
In 2012 we donated RM10,000 to the Thalassemia Society Ranau which helps the Thalassemia major patients in getting their treatment/patient services. Apart from donating money the Tour de Sabah crew also, for the first time, organised a blood donation drive in Ranau. We sincerely thank Ranau Hospital for their part in making the blood donation drive a success. The blood donation drive was held on 26 August 2012.
Apart from donating to the Thalassemia Society Ranau, we also donated RM10,000 to the Holy Family Residence for Senior Citizens in Papar. On 18 August the Tour de Sabah crew paid a visit to the senior citizens homes, treated them with home cooked meals and donated basic necessities such as rice, cooking oil. milo, powdered milk, etc.
The pace of the peloton has increased over the years as well as the riding skills necessary to join the tour. With the peloton now cruising at 36km/h and sprints home at over 50km/h the tour is fun but challenging.
The sense of achievement by MAMIL's (Middle Aged Men in Lycra) as they completed each stage was evident as they celebrated and enjoyed all that Sabah has to offer.
The 2013 Tour de Sabah will be held from Sunday, 29th September to 5th October.
